Chapter Twenty-Six - Da Capo

Chapter Twenty-Six
Da Capo
Berlin
August 1945

In this chapter, Hilda goes to work as a translator with the British Legation and moves into an apartment in the Steubenplatz in Charlottenburg, and Bekka begins her work with MI6, moving into an apartment nearby in the Kaiser-Friedrich-Straße and has furniture and fittings sent from the family. She and Bobby go on a denazification course as part of their cover, and discuss the usefulness of the tactics employed. She and Bobby go on their first foray, which results in a skirmish with the Soviets in their sector. The Cold War has already begun. Hilda has a new boyfriend, Gergy Apàthy, a fellow interpreter for the British who was in Sachsenhausen with her parents, whom she learns died near the end of the war. They are married, and host folk music evenings in their apartment. Bekka tells Hilda the truth about Rudi, and Hilda offers to find out where he is buried. Kalli as a growing child shows himself to be his father's son.
