In this chapter, the girls finally reach Berlin, and the safety of the British sector. There, they are first interrogated, which causes a disruption given their work and identities. But they are soon welcomed as members almost of staff, making themselves useful. Bekka has a welcome conversation with Otto, and is able to have Kalli properly baptised by a saintly Jesuit priest. Bekka meets a young woman with a baby also come from Dresden, and ponders the problem of the Lieutenant, who is sweet on her. She receives word of her assignment as a spy with MI6 and is not best pleased. She receives a new identity. Reichsfürher Himmler also is in British custody, but his time with them ends badly under highly dodgy circumstances, which they are quick to cover up. Bekka has a heart-to-heart talk with Lieutenant Brian.

An absolutely chilling book examining the plans of Himmler to survive, the forensics of the corpse at Lüneberg, and a bombshell from Eichmann, MI6, and the CIA. At least at Eichmann's trial in Jerusalem in 1962, Himmler was not deceased, and very possibly in Flensburg, meaning that he never left Germany.  If this sounds suspiciously like Martin Bormann, declared dead when he was alive elsewhere, it should. I am reminded of my Sepp contact cryptically stating that 'they' had a way of disappearing people, declaring them dead when they were not.

This is what Bekka documented, among other things at the Gestapo, and what she reported to Brian. This is what she was listening to and focused on 'recording only the data.' Himmler's direct involvement is mentioned in some detail. 
Hitler's Rudolf Hess Mystery Finally Solved in 2025 - a video discussing the results of the release of information after the expiry of the term of the British Official Secrets Act on his case. The SIS drugging him while in British custody to shut him up about what he knew about British involvement in his flight rings very true, as does the Soviets keeping him in Spandau to have a hold in West Berlin. The autopsy shows that he was murdered before hanging by a lamp cord.

Chapter Fourteen Lebensborn 10 July 1944   Hotel Metropole (Gestapo Headquarters)    In this chapter, Bekka and Rudi are married by order of the Reichsfürher and move to the Waffen-SS Training Centre at the Schönbrunn, which contains a Lebensborn and makes use of the adjacent satellite camp of Mauthausen for labour. As they get to know one another, we learn Rudi's story.  This story began as a piece of information from a World War II history enthusiast about a relationship between Joseph (Sepp) Dietrich and an Austrian girl who was co-opted into the BDM - Bund Deutsche Mädel - the Girls' Hitler Youth. I was fascinated how someone from the Austrian upperclass could be indoctrinated into being 'a good Nazi'. This case is not the only one in the annals of Nazi Germany; 'Aryan-looking' children in all parts of occupied Europe were so co-opted, often taken to Germany directly. Chapter Twelve Resistance June 1942 Hotel Metropole (Gestapo Headquarters)    In this chapter, the girls are sent to work at the headquarters of the Vienna Gestapo, the largest branch in the Greater Reich, and Bekka is emancipated, going to live with Hilda in a women's boarding house that serves government and SS employees. Hilda's boss in the Detective Branch is very personable, but Bekka's - the Commandant of the Headquarters - dislikes her on sight. Bekka is charged with programming the Lorenz machine, the encryption device used by the Reich high command, several categories of complexity above the Enigma, which was generally used. In reading through recent messages, she finds a reference to Otto in Washington DC in the United States. Sending him a message, she receives in return the charge to send him all information and is given contacts in the resistance in Vienna.
