Chapter Twenty-Five - Spoils
Chapter Twenty-Five
Spoils
Berlin
July 1945
In this chapter, the British assume control of their sector and throw a victory parade, with Churchill and members of his cabinet visiting. We learn of Brian Fortescue's war experience. The girls work on collecting data for British Intelligence, while in Prague, Sophie, Fritz, and family are treated as the Jews were in the Reich, and are sent to a concentration camp at Karlsbad; they discover that Ernst has been sent to a Russian labour camp. Sepp is at Augsberg with Ursula who is helping him write up his account of the war, and has long interrogations with various individuals, who regard him as either pathetic or disingenuous. He is moved to Wiesbaden, and the Americans are intent on finding out just what happened at Malmédy. Sepp, as Himmler had, warns the Allies of the Russians. With the help of de Gaulle, Otto returns to Austria, and finds that his father's enemies are still causing him trouble. He writes to Truman and Churchill for aid against the Russians in Austria, but the old Habsburg expulsion order is reintroduced and he and his brothers must leave Austria. To avoid being stateless and without papers, the Prince of Monaco is prevailed upon to give them passports. Otto can at last begin rebuilding his life and sets to work.
