In this chapter, we see the progress of Sepp's 12th Panzers in the field at Caen, Himmler learns that he was a target of the July Plot, and Dietrich and his brother in law are placed in solitary confinement. Bekka has a surprise for Rudi on his birthday, and he teaches her swing dancing. At the base dance, Hilda is introduced to Oskar, and they hit it off. Rudi's company go out for field training, Oskar and Hilda become engaged, and Huber has an unpleasant surprise for Bekka; she is saved from disaster by Rudi who happens to uncover a bug in their apartment, but her next-door neighbour is not so lucky. Rudi leaves for the Ardennes, and Oskar gives him his violin.
