In this chapter, Bekka and Rudi are married by order of the Reichsfürher and move to the Waffen-SS Training Centre at the Schönbrunn, which contains a Lebensborn and makes use of the adjacent satellite camp of Mauthausen for labour. As they get to know one another, we learn Rudi's story. Huber is called on the carpet by the Reichsfürher, and Bekka returns to work at the Gestapo, revealing to Hilda that Rudi is a Wittelsbach, but not that he is gay. Rudi and Bekka play music at the recreation hour, and meet Oskar Hagenauer, whose violin Rudi borrows. Rudi has nightmares of fire. They make the Liturgy of the Hours together in the mornings, and we learn of his family's faith and his dreams of becoming a rocket scientist and love of quantum physics. The reveal their work with the resistance to each other.
